Asking the Right Questions When Visiting a Retirement Community

When considering any new place to call home, it’s important to have all the details you need to make an informed decision—and choosing a retirement community is no different.

Here is a short list of vital questions to ask as you visit different communities:

  • How convenient is the location? What’s around the community?
  • Is the community a true Continuing Care Retirement Community with a licensed Skilled Nursing Unit?
  • What types of contracts and financial options are available?
  • Does the community offer a Lifecare option?
  • How does the management and staff address questions and concerns from its residents?
  • Ask for a disclosure statement showing the community’s financial statements for the last 5 years. How much have fees increased?
  • Is the community all-inclusive or are there ancillary charges for certain services & amenities? Check the fine print.
  • Is the community prepared to serve its residents in case of an emergency?

Truly independent living comes from the confidence of knowing you made the best choice for your retirement.

Making the Right Move for You

Considering a move to a retirement community? Make sure they have a skilled nursing facility on-hand.

We talk quite a bit about the luxurious apartments and cottages, the beauty of the natural wildlife surrounding our campus, and of course the wonderful hotel-like services and amenities. Plus the delicious food, indoor pool and gym, friendly staff and more.

All of those items are very important when choosing a retirement community. You want to make sure you’re in a place that fits your personality, needs and wants. You’re moving because you want a wonderful lifestyle.

But you’re also making this move to secure your future, and should you have a fall or other medical occurrence, chances are you will need to spend some time in rehabilitation before returning to your apartment or cottage. This is the case for people of all ages, and of course becomes increasingly important as we age.

So make sure to ask the question “Does this community have a skilled nursing and rehabilitation center on-site?” If not, you may need to move again should you need skilled nursing or rehabilitative care.

An independent living resident receives rehabilitative care.

Should you find yourself in the hospital, you need to make a decision as to where you will get your care. Typically you choose from a list of area facilities without the benefit of exploring the facility in-person or doing the proper research to ensure they provide the great care you need.

At Crane’s Mill, we have a 24-hour skilled nursing and rehab department in our health center. If a Crane’s Mill resident is in a position to need this high level of care, the choice has been made in advance as to where they will spend their time in rehabilitation. They likely even know the staff, residents and neighbors. And they certainly know they will receive the top-notch care that Crane’s Mill provides. You can click here to find out more details on this specialized area of our community.

Crane’s Mill Health Center Receives 5-Star Rating

Searching for a healthcare facility that provides five-star care in skilled nursing and sub-acute rehab just became easier for residents of the West Essex area.

Last month, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) awarded this highest rating, Five-Star, to the skilled nursing and sub-acute rehab units of the Crane’s Mill Health Center, located in West Caldwell.

CMS created the Five-Star Quality Rating System to help individuals, families and caregivers compare nursing homes more easily, and to identify key areas related to the quality of care. Key areas include: recent health inspections, staffing ratios, and quality measures, which encompass 11 essential areas. Those facilities that have achieved a 5-star rating are considered to deliver a quality of care significantly above average.

The Crane’s Mill Health Center consists of 132 beds, 66 of which are designated to provide skilled nursing and sub-acute care. The sub-acute rehab area of Crane’s Mill accepts direct admissions from hospitals and medical centers for Medicare beneficiaries who require short-term care. The patient does not have to live at Crane’s Mill. The remaining beds are assigned to studio apartments in the assisted living and memory care units of the Crane’s Mill Health Center.

According to Mercy Gonzales, RN, CDP, CALA, LNHA, Administrator, “Achieving a Five-Star Quality Rating is the goal of every long-term nursing facility. This award is the result of incredible teamwork from all our various areas, including admissions, rehab, nursing, housekeeping, dietary, recreation, and all ancillary areas.  I’m so proud to head up this incredible team.”
