Why Crane’s Mill Residents Love Our Location!

Crane’s Mill is located in West Caldwell, New Jersey. The retirement community’s location combines secluded nature with a convenient Essex County location.

Crane’s Mill residents love our location—it’s surrounded by nature yet close to everything.

‘459 Passaic Avenue’ sounds like a standard enough address. However, it’s anything but ordinary. Home to Crane’s Mill Continuing Care Retirement Community, 459 Passaic Avenue reads like a dream destination for those who like nature AND the allure of being in the heart of all the action.

The Crane’s Mill campus is situated on 48 beautiful acres with a Certified Wildlife Habitat and a picturesque pond. In addition, there are walking trails that lead to West Essex Park—a 1,361 acre park which is home to numerous trails, the Hatfield Swamp, and so much more.

Of course, that’s if you head west. If you leave the community via the main exit, you come to Passaic Avenue, which leads to the Caldwells to the North and Livingston to the South. In the Caldwells in particular, Crane’s Mill residents find themselves only one mile to shopping (Shop-Rite, Stop and Shop, Marshall’s, TJ Maxx, CVS, and many small shops, just to name a few), restaurants (Italian, Chinese, Japanese, American, and more!), and public transportation to New York City is across the street. Plus, downtown Montclair is only about 5 miles away, home to many acclaimed restaurants, shopping, and the Montclair Art Museum.

What’s more, Crane’s Mill is close to the Paper Mill Playhouse, Yogi Berra Stadium and Museum, the Turtle Back Zoo, the New Jersey Performing Arts Center, and countless other cultural attractions, malls, and movie theaters.

Then, when residents return home to Crane’s Mill, they’re back in the serene, quiet setting that feels like miles away from anywhere—yet it’s only one mile away from everywhere.

Discovering the Best Retirement Location in New Jersey

If you’re searching for the best retirement location in New Jersey, you won’t need to look any further than Crane’s Mill in West Caldwell.

Our friends at Inside Jersey magazine wrote an exciting cover story on “Jersey’s Best Places to Retire.” Here’s an excerpt of how the magazine selected towns for the list:

“Using a specific methodology to narrow our search, Inside Jersey looked at cost of living and crime rates, culture and camaraderie. We tallied available health care services, including licensed internists, hospitals and long-term care agencies that provide preventive, rehabilitative and therapeutic services to patients in their homes. We tracked down museums, playhouses, art galleries, historic sites and other recreational opportunities. And we looked at each town’s unique character and livability. For example, can you walk to the local grocery store on well-maintained sidewalks? Are public and other transportation options readily available? What makes each town particularly welcoming to older adults?”

If Crane’s Mill were a town, it would likely rank #1. Here’s why:
Cost of living—Everything is included, from property taxes to housekeeping.
Available health care services—On-site health center and easy access to 3 top area hospitals (Mountainside, Morristown Medical and Saint Barnabas)
Long-term care and rehab—Top-rated health center provides care exclusively designed for seniors
Culture—We’re close to many museums, playhouses, historic sites and more. Plus, we bring in top performers, programs, lectures, and Towne Square plays host to an art gallery every day of the year, with art rotating every month.
Can you walk to the local grocery store?—You bet. We have a grocery store, The Corner Market, in Towne Square. It’s connected to every single apartment.
Public Transportation?—It’s included for every Crane’s Mill resident. Daily trips to shopping, errands, malls and more. Plus 4 doctor visits each month. No pass or cash needed, just say “hello” to the friendly driver and you’re on your way.

That’s quite a list, and really those are only the beginning of why Crane’s Mill is such a wonderful community for senior living. The apartments and cottages are simply extraordinary. Maintenance, landscaping and linen service are all included. The staff is top-notch, knows our residents by name and is available 24-7 in case of an emergency.

At Crane’s Mill, our community is situated in what feels like a world away from everything on a secluded 48-acre campus, yet we’re quite literally only steps away from shopping, dining, entertainment and more.

One of the (many) perks of living in such a lovely location? There are countless times throughout the year when the community looks simply amazing. One of our favorites is autumn.

We were lucky enough to schedule a photography session right at the peak of this year’s fall season. Please enjoy this fun, colorful video slideshow and be sure to send us an email and let us know what you think!
